The European Education Summit was organised online and took place on the 9th December 2021. Attended remotely by 38.596 participants, the Summit was opened by Mrs. Ursula VON DER LEYEN, President of the European Commission. Within her welcoming speech, the President highlighted the nature of t the foundation of education as a common, shared value and the EU commitment from the EU Commission towards the full building of a European education area, where skills and experiences are mutually recognised by the year 2025 through: a) The strategy for EU HEIs to foster deeper transnational cooperation; b) a straightforward education directly sustaining green and digital transitions and related skills c) the massive investment through Recovery Plans into education and training as well as upskilling.
For what concerns specifically the Erasmus+ programme, the intervention of Mrs. Mariya GABRIEL, European Commissioner, Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, focused on the tangible increase of its budget for the years 2021-2027 compared to its predecessor programme of 2014-2020. The Commissioner placed the emphasis on the renewed strong focus reserved in the new Erasmus+ programme on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and youth participation in democratic life.
