The boom of the Internet has pervaded every aspect of our daily life. From shopping to training, there’s no activity which hasn’t been impacted from the infinite amount of opportunities offered from a world-connected network, resulting in positive as well as negative outcomes. The benefits include also increased job opportunities and better job matching: through the web, companies or guidance services providers can identify the profiles who fits most their position among thousands of candidates and workers can apply for job opportunities which are thousands of kilometres away. In order to promote the successful integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with the Labour Market Information (LMI) in career guidance services, in July 2018 CEDEFOP has released an “Handbook of ICT practices for guidance and career development”.
The document supports “structured knowledge exchange on activities, methods and tools through the collection of 25 ICT and LMI best practices identified throughout a multidimensional decision framework”, taking into consideration their compatibility with research priorities for ICT and LMI integration, their innovativeness, transferability and adaptability to other contexts. The declared main scope of the document is to support the identification and transfer of best practices from one country to another.
Data and information have been collected through interview-based fieldwork under the frame of field visits to the organisations responsible for the implementation of the selected practices. The brief analysis of the 25 ICT and LMI initiatives from all over Europe focuses on the peculiarities and the most important information about the single initiative, allowing an easier identification of potentially transferrable aspects.
The handbook is easy to use, with rich information and tips, and offers high-level policy recommendations. Moreover, the case studies annexed to it provide more elaborate information on individual ICT and labour market information (LMI).
According to the Cedefop’s Acting Director, Mara Brugia, the tool will “support national capacitation of services in education, training, employment services and other relevant organisations” and “encourage the take-up of the best technology has to offer in the service of EU citizens, stimulating fruitful cooperation between pioneers and the most recent adopters.”
