With the increasing popularity of drones and their many applications, the demand for skills and talents related to drone operations and services is likely to continue to grow exceeding the current supply of students that finish secondary education and VET training levels and decide to follow STEM professions, as the industry expands and new applications for drones are discovered.
Currently, trends in secondary education are focusing on STEM and robotics, which have become a priority in many schools.
Combining these two trends, the project Drones4STEM aims to support school education organisations in 4 countries (ES, GR, SI, IT) and across Europe in their efforts to deliver teaching methodology for helping students to develop relevant skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as well as educators to address the emerging requirements of digital training with innovative pedagogical techniques.
The project consortium consists of the following organisations:
- Politeknika Iskategia Txorierri (PIT), Spain
- Hellenic Open University (HOU), Greece,
- Strokovni izobrazevalni center, (SIC), Slovenia,
- Aintek Symvouloi Epicheiriseon Efarmoges Ypsilis Technologias Ekpaidefsi Anonymi Etaireia, (IDEC), Greece,
- European Digital Learning Network ETS, DLearn, Italy.
During its lifetime (24 months in total), the partners will be involved in the development of the following results:
- an easily programmable and customizable educational drone platform, e.g. through Scratch;
- 3 use cases with all supporting educational material for carrying out project-based learning activities based on the advanced uses of drones in domains like smart farming, environmental monitoring and restoration;
- an e-learning course for relevant STEM activities.
All results will be piloted, evaluated and demonstrated through impact creation activities and an EU community of practice.
The project and its activities are mainly addressed to:
- The primary project target group that consists of teachers in secondary education, who want to upskill in using drone technologies as an educational tool in STEM education, as well as students who want to develop skills regarding its application.
- Secondary target groups that are policy makers, educational authorities, STEM centres, Educational Providers, Industry with interest in the field of drone applications and stakeholders.
