The European Digital Learning Network participated last 13th September 2018 in Brussels, to the conference “Innovative Assessment Methods for Validation”. The event is part the project InnoVal, in the framework of validation of non-formal and informal learning and it has been hosted by the Lifelong Learning Platform (LLLP). For Dlearn and all participants has been an occasion to meet the most important stakeholders involved in VNFIL (Validation of non-formal and informal learning) and discuss about the validation of non-formal and informal learning and next steps especially regarding Innovative Assessment Methods.
As stated by Godelieve Van Den Brande (DG EMPLOYMENT, European Commission), that opened the conference, the validation of non-formal and informal learning has been an important topic since the 2012 with the Council recommendation (2012/C 398/01) and it is still an important topic today due to the fact that the Members States did not succeed all to integrate VNFIL into their national systems. Thanks to the support of CEDEFOP and the European Inventory on Validation, we can have a clear picture of what is happening at national level regarding the implementation of the validation process. During the conference, it has been announced by the CEDEFOP expert, Ernesto Villalba of the Department of Learning and Employability that a new document regarding VNFIL and career guidance will be published by CEDEFOP between 2018 and 2019.
Why VNFIL is so important today?
The validation of learning outcomes, namely knowledge, skills and competences acquired through non-formal and informal learning can play an important role in enhancing employability and mobility, as well as increasing motivation for lifelong learning, particularly in the case of disadvantaged or low-qualified people as stated in the 2012 Council Recommendations.
Why VNFIL is a key issue for DLEARN?
The validation of non-formal and informal learning is a strategic topic for DLEARN. Coherence in lifelong learning strategies means building bridges between formal, non-formal and informal learning. That is why DLEARN participated, during the conference, to the Validation Task Force sub-group to provide input to the European Qualifications Framework Advisory Group for their meeting scheduled for the next year.
