Cyber security refers to the body of technologies, processes, and practices designed to protect networks, devices, programs, and data from attack, damage, or unauthorized access.
People often associate cyber security with computers, but it has a far broader application than just this. In fact, tools and methods for hacking have increased as the internet has grown, and it is now much easier to attack a business or an individual in this way. These tools have become known as “Exploit Kits” and are designed to take advantage of vulnerabilities in your PC or Servers (European Centre of Technology).
According to both InfoSec and IBM, there are five types of industries that are more likely to have a cyberattack. One of the sectors most attacked is for sure the FINANCIAL ONE, but also the HEALTHCARE industries. In fact, IBM reports that in 2015 alone, over 100 million healthcare records were reportedly compromised. A lot of data includes credit card information, email addresses, social security numbers, employment information and medical history have been recorded. Cybercriminals can use this information to establish false medical identities, commit fraud and phishing attacks on a healthcare organization. Another vulnerable sector is the MANUFACTORING industry, which includes automotive, electronic, textile and pharmaceutical companies (InfoSec, 2015).
The other two sectors that receive every year a huge number of cyber attacks are the GOVERNAMENT and TRANSFORMATION. The risk is that through these attacks the Government exposes millions of employee records including social security numbers, birthplace and digitized employee fingerprints. Instead, IBM notes that some hackers are attracted to the transportation industries because a successful attack can result in mass chaos scenarios, while some hackers target transportation purely for the financial gain (IBM, 2016).
